ODYSSEY TO FREEDOM

Published by Random House

2011

Few know the story of George Bizos before he was known as ‘George Bizos- the human rights lawyer’. This book tells the story of George Bizos as a young Greek boy, who sailed across violent seas and entered into a foreign land as a refugee to escape the German invaders in his home country. Bizos, in South Africa,  grew into one of the world's most renowned human rights lawyers. He was an advocate that never gave up on his fight against Apartheid, even after numerous threats and intimidation by the Apartheid regime authorities. Upon Apartheid ending, Bizos was a part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This book gives insight on these phenomenal events and gives the reader insight into the worlds of George Bizos, as an advocate and as an everyday family man.

Abstract: "This article juxtaposes ancient Greek and contemporary South African notions of democratic constitutions and just laws. Solon and Cleisthenes' democratic reforms are thus compared with the new South African constitution, whereas Plato's hierarchical proposal for an ideal state was influential on some apartheid verligtes. A crucial question concerns the relationship between law and ethics, i.e. whether unjust laws are to be obeyed by citizens. On the one hand is Socrates, who insists on respecting the laws of Athens in facing his death sentence; on the other hand is Bram Fischer, who refuses to obey laws that are unjust. The difference between just and illegitimate laws is further illustrated with examples from Pericles' Funeral Oration in Thucydides and Sophocles' Antigone."

Abstract: "There has been a debate on whether or not the attorneys' and advocates' professions will be fused. Sidney Kentridge QC said in 1994 and 1998 that the Bar should remain an independent referral profession of single practitioners. He wrote: "There are few things as essential to the maintenance of liberty in a state as the existence of an independent body of advocates ready to appear for every kind of person in every kind of case". He relies on his experience of over forty years."
